JSerra works hard to live up to its mantra of faith, intellect, and character. There is not a separate mantra for athletics.
With 26 teams and 23 different programs, a wide variety of high school and youth camps, and a state-of-the-art 30-acre athletic campus, we focus on building character and community in our competitive athletic programs.
Aristotle stated, "Moral excellence comes about as a result of habit. We become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts." Athletic excellence comes about as a result of habit as well. Athletes do not determine their success — they (and their coaches) determine their habits, and their habits determine their success.
In the short time Lion Nation has been alive, our success is evident in all that we do. Legendary basketball coach John Wooden once said, “Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It’s courage that counts." Our JSerra family cultivates this habit daily — from the courage of pioneering this institution to the courage necessary to step into battle on the athletic fields.
Culture, culture, culture. What is it? Why is it important? How do you change it, build it, and sustain one that you believe in? At JSerra Athletics, we believe we have some answers. The most effective cultures implement three fundamental ideas: building safety, sharing vulnerability, and establishing purpose. Group performance depends on behavior that communicates one powerful overarching mantra: We are safe, connected, and purposeful!
Daniel Coyle, author of The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups, states, “High purpose environments don’t descend on groups from on high; they are dug out of the ground, over and over, as a group navigates its problems together and evolves to meet the challenges of a fast changing world.” Without a doubt, we find ourselves in unprecedented times. In the face of these continuing changes, the JSerra coaching staff is committed to adhering steadfastly to our foundational, educational-based athletic purpose statement:
“The purpose of JSerra athletics is to form relationships built upon integrity and love, with intentional focus on the personal and competitive development of student-athletes, and service to others.”
Lion Nation can be assured that we have been “navigating our problems” and “evolving” through this difficult season. We are more focused than ever on why we are here and who we serve. The culture we are sustaining is one that serves those who choose to evolve with us
